Mensah (BRE), 1982 David Mensah was born in Ghana and emigrated to Canada in 1979 to attend Tyndale College. He continued in his studies to earn a Master of Arts at Acadia University and a PhD from St. Michael's College of the University of Toronto, and taught at Tyndale from 1986-1990. In 1990, David and his wife Brenda and their three daughters returned to Ghana to direct an organization founded by David prior to his arrival in Canada, the Northern Empowerment Association (NEA). This organization addresses some of the most difficult problems in Northern Ghana, namely severe poverty, malnutrition and starvation, lack of clean water, disease, and the absence of the gospel. In 1996, the NEA was selected by the Government of Ghana as the best development organization in Northern Ghana. David was chosen by the Government of Canada through its Canadian High Commission in Ghana to design a program which brought reconciliation between two warring tribes. Since 1994, he has coordinated the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, which has established schools, clinics, women's projects, and environmental projects in many communities. He has also served as the Principal at the Laurenda International School since 1993, In 1998, David published the book Kwabena: An African Boy's Journey of Faith, which is about to go into its fourth printing. [ Page 13 ] [ Heading 12.2 ] Tyndale Seminary Makram Barsoum (MTS), 1988 Makram Barsoum was born in El-Minia, Egypt and emigrated to Canada in 1974. He earned a Master of Science degree in Applied Science from the University of Toronto, and was recognized as a Professional Engineer in 1977. As an engineer, Makram worked in the Canadian nuclear and aerospace industries, concentrating his efforts on the Canada Arm and Space Station Freedom. Along the way, Makram completed his Master of Theological Studies degree at Tyndale Seminary in 1988. In 1996, Makram and his wife Mona were appointed jointly by the mission organization InterServe and the Presbyterian Church in Canada to serve in the Middle East with SAT-7 Media Service, a multiple- partner project providing Christian satellite television service in the Arabic language to people in the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. While Makram began his work with SAT-7 in Nicosia, Cyprus, he has guided the establishment of SAT-7's audience and church relations department in Lebanon, Egypt, and France. Makram is currently the Director of Program Acquisitions & Scheduling. His prayer is that through his work, millions of people in the Middle East will experience the transforming power of the Christian Gospel. The Barsoums have three children: Sherien, Philip, and Christopher. [ Heading 13 ] Honourary Doctorate 2003 [ Heading 13.1 ] Dave Toycen Dave Toycen is President and Chief Executive Officer of World Vision Canada. Dave is a passionate advocate for children, and in his 30 years with World Vision he has worked tirelessly on behalf of those who face poverty and injustice. Since he became President of World Vision Canada in 1996, he has guided the organization into a phase of dramatic growth and into greater involvement in advocacy and justice issues. Dave's faith is at the core of his commitment to holistic ministry. His care for the poor is inspired by Isaiah's vision of a new earth where poverty and despair are eradicated (Isaiah 65) and by Christ's challenge to "let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). In the past 20 years, Dave has been on-site during almost every major humanitarian disaster to provide assessment and support. In all, more than $1.3 billion has been raised in aid and development for the poor under his leadership. A Canadian citizen, Dave Toycen studied at Lawrence University (BA) and Fuller Theological Seminary (MDiv). Dave and his wife Diane have two children, Jaymes and Jocelyn, and one granddaughter.
