Pursuing this call with passion, J.L. graduated from Geneva College with a degree in Student Ministry and went on to receive an MA in Youth Ministry from Asbury Seminary. After 11 years of youth ministry in the local church, J.L. and his wife felt a distinct sense that God was leading them to serve on a college campus. Since 2010, J.L., his wife, Heidi, and their four children, Silas, Sadie, Corinna, and Lawson, have lived on the college campus of Houghton College, where J.L. has ministered to the needs of undergraduate students as Associate Dean of the Chapel and Professor of Youth Ministry. J.L. is grateful to God for leading him to Tyndale, for his wife and kids who supported this adventure without hesitation, for the professors who took the time to invest in him, and whose training has richly impacted the ways he is able to serve in his current ministry setting. [ Heading 7.2 ] Convocation Speaker Dr. Janet Clark, Dean Emerita, has a breadth of experience as a theological educator, executive leader, counselling practitioner and international worker. Most recently she served as senior vice-president and dean at Tyndale, and before that, as vice-dean at McMaster Divinity College. She is a past president of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada (ATS) and continues to be involved in accrediting activities. She is married to Rev. Blair Clark and they have four adult children and eight grandchildren. [ Heading 7.3 ] Honorary Doctorate Recipient Dr. Winston Ling graduated from the University of Toronto in 1965 with Bachelor of Commerce and moved into a career that began with an accountant role with Ernst and Young, and culminated with his role as Executive Vice President of Extendicare Inc. from 1978-1994. During that time with Extendicare, Dr. Ling was part of a leadership team that facilitated a growth from 4,000 residents to over 40,000. It was in 1994, during a financial crisis at what was then the Ontario Bible College and Seminary, that Dr. Ling’s occupational trajectory was altered. Asked by the President, Dr. Brian Stiller, to join him in the management of an institution so critical and strategic for evangelicalism in Canada, he felt a call and an urging to take on that challenge. Through a difficult but exhilarating 1 2 years, Dr. Ling steered the financial resources of the institution we now know as Tyndale University, to ensure financial wellbeing and stability. While he eventually moved on from that role, Dr. Ling never left Tyndale. Following retirement, he continued serving faithfully to see Tyndale’s mission realized. Dr. Ling drove the initial work on the purchase of the new campus on Bayview Avenue and through the years he has quietly served Tyndale Presidents, the Board of Governors, the Tyndale Foundation Board, and many others behind the scenes. Dr. Winston Ling and Tyndale are synonymous in so many ways, with Tyndale’s mission, focus and wellbeing being his major concern. Page 11 [ Heading 8 ] ABOUT TYNDALE [ Heading 8.1 ] TYNDALE’S HISTORY Tyndale University was founded in 1894 as the Toronto Bible Training School, the first school of its kind in Canada. Later known as Toronto Bible College, it merged in 1968 with the London College of Bible and Missions to become Ontario Bible College. The Seminary was established in 1976 to provide theological education at the graduate level. In 1998, the name Tyndale was adopted, honouring William Tyndale (1494-1 536), the early English reformer whose commitment to making Scripture more widely accessible led him to undertake the first English translation of the Bible, at the cost of his own life. In 2003, Tyndale University College & Seminary was legislated by the Province of Ontario as a degree-granting post-secondary institution of higher learning. In 2007, Tyndale purchased the Morrow Park property from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto and in 2014, the move to the new 56-acre campus on Bayview Avenue was completed. Effective December 2020, Tyndale’s name was legally changed to Tyndale University by an act of legislation. Tyndale continues to build on its historic tradition as a vibrant, multidenominational institution of faith and learning. Tyndale’s diverse student body is engaged in comprehensive post-secondary education programs taught from a faith perspective. Tyndale provides undergraduate degree programs that prepare students for professional vocations and graduate studies. The Seminary, accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, offers graduate theological education at the master’s and doctoral levels. Tyndale presently has over 1,600 students representing more than 40 denominations and 60 ethnic backgrounds and over 1 2,900 alumni. [ Heading 8.2 ] THE MISSION Tyndale is dedicated to the pursuit of truth, to excellence in teaching, learning and research, for the enriching of mind, heart and character, to serve the church and the world for the glory of God.
