After moving to Canada, she began work at the Royal Bank. She married and had two sons. She then attended York University completing a BFA (Honours) degree as a Dance major. After graduation, she experienced a career in dance as both a performer and teacher. She then returned to the corporate world, working at Toronto Hydro. Her home church for the past 25 years has been Broadview Faith Temple in Toronto. Over the years, she held many different leadership and administrative posts. In 2008, the pastor retired and she and her husband became lead pastors. In 2011, they adopted their two daughters. Ouida entered Tyndale Seminary in 2012 to obtain a Master's in Theological Studies and complete the internship to become a spiritual director. Immediately following, she continued her studies in the inaugural Doctor of Ministry in Spiritual Formation track. In 2017, during her DMin studies at Tyndale, she qualified for and became a registered psychotherapist. The following year she attended the postgraduate program at Haliburton School of the Arts and received certification as an expressive arts practitioner. Today, as she reflects on her learning at Tyndale she recognizes that God has found a way to merge and converge all the seemingly unrelated parts of her mosaic into a sacred story. She feels blessed to serve and incorporate her creative inclinations together in ministry as a pastor, spiritual director, registered psychotherapist, and expressive arts practitioner. She would like to extend her heartfelt gratitude to her family, her DMin colleagues, and the entire Tyndale community. 12 [ Page 13 of 16 ] [ Heading 12 ] CONVOCATION SPEAKER [ Heading 12.1 ] Dr. James Beverley A native of Moncton, New Brunswick, James Beverley has degrees from Acadia University (BA Hon, MDiv), the University of Toronto (MTh), and the University of St. Michael's College (PhD). In 1978 he began teaching at Atlantic Baptist College (now Crandall University) and in 1988 moved to Tyndale. Dr. Beverley has taught throughout Canada and in the United States, Central America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, and pastored churches in Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. A member of the American Academy of Religion and the Evangelical Theological Society, he has written fifteen books, including Nelson's Illustrated Guide to Religions, Religions A to Z, Holy Laughter & The Toronto Blessing, Christ and Islam, and Getting Jesus Right. The focus of his study has been new religions, world religions, Christian apologetics, and charismatic movements. He is known for his authoritative knowledge of Scientology, the Unification Church, and Islam. His expert opinion has been sought in criminal and civil trials and he is periodically consulted on religious groups by the Ontario government. Known for thoroughness in research, deep curiosity about people, and openness to authentic discussion with people of all faiths, Dr. Beverley has earned unusual access to many religious leaders, including a personal interview with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Various media outlets have turned to Dr. Beverley for commentary, including BBC radio, CBC Radio, The Los Angeles Times, CTV News, and The Globe & Mail. He is a long-time columnist for Faith Today, and written for Charisma and for Christianity Today. For almost 45 years, Dr. Beverley has been married to Gloria. Gloria is a kindergarten teacher, retired from the Durham District School Board. Dr. Beverley is retiring to his hometown to pursue research, writing, teaching and speaking, and to spend time with his two children and two grandchildren. 13 [ Page 14 of 16 ] [ Heading 13 ] CONVOCATION SPEAKER [ Heading 13.1 ] Prof. Donald Goertz Retiring this summer after over 25 years of distinguished service to Tyndale, Prof. Donald Goertz speaks from his rich memory of Tyndale's institutional history and his deep desire and sense of excitement for the church in Canada, and around the world, to thrive in a rapidly changing culture. His role as founding Director, MDiv Church in the City (In Ministry) and Church in the City concentration, reflects his unfailing commitment to engage the church in its increasingly urban, multicultural, post-Christendom reality. Prof. Goertz's teaching areas of specialization are Canadian church history, Baptist history, spirituality, and missional leadership. Prof. Goertz, an ordained pastor in the Baptist Church of Ontario and Quebec, brought to his position at Tyndale a passion for the Church and for preparing people to integrate their faith with their personal and professional lives. He is a regular speaker in a variety of church settings and is a popular seminar and retreat facilitator on such diverse topics as prayer, grief, leadership, church renewal and spiritual formation. He is a member of several societies, including the Canadian Society of Church History and the Canadian Baptist Historical Society. He has authored numerous papers and articles and has contributed to a variety of publications in the areas of church history, the urban church and spiritual formation. A third culture kid himself, he particularly enjoys the richness, and diversity of what this city and region have to offer, bringing his creativity and passion to interaction with Toronto's multicultural communities and a number of missions-related boards. He is married to Tyndale alumna and adjunct professor, Marion Goertz, and can speak at length about his three exceptional grandchildren and their remarkable parents. An avid hiker and conservationist, Prof. Goertz looks forward to regularly hiking in the Rocky Mountains, a place that holds many fond memories for him. 14 [ Page 15 of 16 ] [ Heading 14 ] ABOUT TYNDALE [ Heading 14.1 ] TYNDALE'S HISTORY Tyndale University College & Seminary was founded in 1894 as the Toronto Bible Training School, the first school of its kind in Canada. Later known as Toronto Bible College, it merged in 1968 with the London College of Bible and Missions to become Ontario Bible College. The Seminary was established in 1976 to provide theological education at the graduate level. In 1998, the name Tyndale was adopted, honouring William Tyndale (1494- 1536), the early English reformer whose commitment to making Scripture more widely accessible led him to undertake the first English translation of the Bible, at the cost of his own life. In 2003, Tyndale University College & Seminary was legislated by the Province of Ontario as a degree-granting post-secondary institution of higher learning. In 2007, Tyndale purchased the Morrow Park property from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto and in 2014, the move to the new 56-acre campus on Bayview Avenue was completed. Tyndale continues to build on its historic tradition as a vibrant, multidenominational institution of faith and learning. Tyndale's diverse student body is engaged in comprehensive post-secondary education programs taught from a faith perspective. Tyndale University College provides undergraduate degree programs that prepare students for professional vocations and graduate studies. Tyndale Seminary, accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, offers graduate theological education at the master's and doctoral levels. Tyndale presently has over 1,600 students representing more than 40 denominations and 60 ethnic backgrounds and over 12,900 alumni. [ Heading 14.2 ] THe MISSION Tyndale is dedicated to the pursuit of truth, to excellence in teaching, learning and research, for the enriching of mind, heart and character, to serve the church and the world for the glory of God. During the service, please turn off all electronic devices and keep aisles clear. 15 [ Page 16 of 16 ] [ An oil lamp image is on the left side column of the page in blue. ] [ Tyndale crest is on the bottom left of the page together with the 125th number on it, the name of the institution beside it] [ Heading 15 ] TYNDALE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE & SEMINARY 3377 Bayview Avenue Toronto, Ontario, M2M 3S4 Telephone: 416.226.6620 Fax: 416.226.6746 www.tyndale.ca ***** This is the end of the e-text.
