Her primary ministry focus is the spiritual care of those who are in crisis, those who are dying or grieving a loss, and those in the community who need the compassion and love of Christ. Her long career in public service has taken her to positions in federal, provincial, and municipal governments. For the past 10 years she has been the Emergency Manager for the County of Simcoe, just north of Toronto, responding to tornadoes, floods, ice storms, Syrian refugees, and other situations. As an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church in Canada, she leads her church's Pastoral Care Team and virtual Prayer Ministry, is a member of its Leading with Care Team safeguarding the vulnerable, and provides pulpit supply for several area churches. She is privileged to provide volunteer chaplaincy services to a long-term care home and a regional hospital. In her spare time, Cathy sings in her church choir, plays alto sax in a community band, snowshoes, paddles, gardens, reads voraciously, and travels extensively. As she concludes her studies at Tyndale, Cathy will deeply miss the student friendships, the leadership of faculty, and the academic challenge, but she is excited to discover what the Lord has in store for her on the next part of her Matthew 28:19 journey. [ Page 14 of 16 ] [ Heading 13 ] RESEARCH PROFESSOR [ Heading 13.1 ] Dr. Barbara Leung Lai For nearly 20 years, Dr. Barbara Leung Lai has served with distinction on the faculty of Tyndale Seminary, teaching the Old Testament and directing the Pastoral and Chinese Ministry program. She identities her faculty role as that of a shepherd-teacher and scholar-saint. She holds the PhD in Old Testament (University of Sheffield), as well as the ThM (University of Toronto-Wycliffe), MDiv (Fuller Theological Seminary), and BTh (Alliance Bible Seminary). Methodologically located in the interdisciplinary terrain of the social sciences and biblical studies, Dr. Leung Lai distinguishes herself in the psychological and multi-disciplinary approaches to biblical texts and themes. She is the author of three academic books and is completing a new book on Text and Praxis. Her publications include numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and entries in study Bibles and dictionaries. She is a frequent presenter at scholarly and professional societies and serves as a reviewer of international journals. She teaches internationally at a number of institutions and has served as a visiting scholar at Fuller and Princeton seminaries and as a reader at Tyndale House, Cambridge. Tyndale is pleased to confer upon Dr. Barbara Leung Lai the title of Research Professor of Old Testament. In this next chapter, Dr. Leung Lai will give focused attention to research and writing and will continue to serve as Scholar Associate of Wycliffe College and as Affiliate Faculty in the PhD Program at Logos Theological Seminary in California. She will engage in strategic international teaching in the United States, Ukraine, Eastern Europe and China. Married to Rev. Warren Lai, Director of Hudson Taylor Centre and Adjunct Faculty at Tyndale, the Lais have an adult son, Eusebius, and his wife Laura, both of whom are engineers in California and active in service in their church as deacon and deaconess. [ Page 15 of 16 ] [ Heading 14 ] PROFESSOR EMERITUS [ Heading 14.1 ] Dr. Vincent Poon Dr. Poon's involvement at Tyndale spans 35 years, beginning as a graduate student (MTS, 1982), then as a member of the Board of Governors (1983-1990), and ultimately as a professor in the Counselling program and the Pastoral and Chinese Ministry program (1991- present). Among Dr. Poon's notable accomplishments was the pivotal role he played in 1998 in the development and launch of the Pastoral and Chinese Ministry program, an English-stream degree program designed to educate pastors and workers for the rapidly-growing Chinese church within the North American context and beyond. Dr. Poon is a physician and a marriage and family therapist, and brings to his work a wealth of experience in family medicine, theology, counselling psychology, pastoral counselling and family therapy. [ Page 16 of 16 ] [ Heading 15 ] ABOUT TYNDALE [ Heading 15.1 ] TYNDALE'S HISTORY Tyndale University College & Seminary was founded in 1894 as the Toronto Bible Training School, the first school of its kind in Canada. Later known as Toronto Bible College, it merged in 1968 with the London College of Bible and Missions to become Ontario Bible College. The Seminary was established in 1976 to provide theological education at the graduate level. In 1998, the name Tyndale was adopted, honouring William Tyndale (1494 - 1536), the early English reformer whose commitment to making Scripture more widely accessible led him to undertake the first English translation of the Bible, at the cost of his own life. In 2003, Tyndale University College & Seminary was legislated by the Province of Ontario as a degree-granting post-secondary institution of higher learning. In 2007, Tyndale purchased the Morrow Park property from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto and in 2014, the move to the new 56-acre campus on Bayview Avenue was completed. Tyndale continues to build on its historic tradition as a vibrant, multidenominational institution of faith and learning. Tyndale's diverse student body is engaged in comprehensive post-secondary education programs taught from a faith perspective. Tyndale University College provides undergraduate degree programs that prepare students for professional vocations and graduate studies. Tyndale Seminary, accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, offers graduate theological education at the master's and doctoral levels. Tyndale presently has over 1,600 students representing more than 40 denominations and 60 ethnic backgrounds and over 12,500 alumni. [ Heading 15.2 ] THE MISSION Tyndale is dedicated to the pursuit of truth, to excellence in teaching, learning and research, for the enriching of mind, heart and character, to serve the church and the world for the glory of God.
