Joseph Bishay was born and raised in Toronto. He earned his Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto in 2001. He spent a year and a half as a researcher at the Hospital for Sick Children’s Cancer & Blood department, and then became an instructor in the Health Sciences department at George Brown College, and MCAT Head Instructor at Kaplan International, teaching future medical students. With a desire to further his teaching qualifications, Joseph enrolled in the BacheLor of Education program at Tyndale in the summer of 2012. During the program, he enjoyed three teaching placements, including a professional interest placement at the Royal Ontario Museum [ROM) where he taught visiting students a variety of natural science and natural history subjects. Joseph has always had a deep desire to serve his community, not only with his teaching talent, but also with his love for technology. For over 20 years, Joseph has been teaching Sunday school classes at St. George & St. Rueiss Coptic Orthodox Church, where he also serves as technical director for theatre Lighting and sound. He works as technical director for other theatrical productions around Toronto, and as a TV producer and technical director for Christian Youth Channel. Recently, Joseph served on the Design Committee of the Logos Fellowship Centre, a $12 million, 80,000 square foot school and community centre in North York. Upon graduation from Tyndale, Joseph returned to his alma mater, Upper Canada College, to teach senior science. Joseph also teaches first-year science in the Seneca at York University program. He and his wife Ninette still reside in Toronto. 13 [ Page 14 of 16 ] GRADUATING STUDENT SPEAKERS [ Heading 12.2 ] Andrew Schmidt Raised on a farm near Woodville, Ontario, Andrew’s introduction at seminary to hermeneutics and parsing was long preceded by other important skills such as chicken-catching, haymow-buiLding, and 4H cattLe-showing. Prior to TyndaLe, Andrew compLeted a B.Sc. in Life Sciences at Queen’s University, Kingston, and then moved into the field of carpentry after graduation. God, however, used TyndaLe’s frequent advertising on Christian radio to caLL him [albeit reluctantly) away from the physical rigors of the construction site to the mental rigors of theological study. As an avid Learner both inside and outside the classroom, Andrew enjoys exploring new educational opportunities. Alongside of his seminary studies he gained new insights while working part-time in the gardening, funeral services, and editing/tutoring fields. His keen interest in the diversities of the Christian church across Toronto led him to spend one school year attending a different church denomination almost every week. Equally at home in the library, construction site, or farm field, Andrew currently has moved back to the country where he continues to work on both the family farm and the construction jobsite while engaged in ministry. Andrew presently serves at both Uxbridge Baptist and Cannington Baptist churches, helping with youth groups, young adult ministry, and pulpit supply preaching. He is grateful to the faculty and staff of TyndaLe Seminary for their excellence in teaching, heartfelt support and, their visible Love for God and God’s kingdom. Andrew also thanks the greater TyndaLe community, and particularly his "band of brothers" for their friendship and encouragement during the Last three years. 14 [ Page 15 of 16 ] [ Heading 13 ] SPEAKER [ Heading 13.1 ] Carla Nelson Carla Dawn Nelson is a proud daughter of Saskatchewan. In that same year, she aLso received the Superintendent’s Award from the Edmonton Public SchooL Board. Her contributions have extended internationally as an educationaL consuLtant with various organizations in BoLivia, Kenya, and India. On a more personaL LeveL, CarLa’s most meaningfuL connections are with her husband, Gary, her daughter Stacy and son-in-Law PhiL, and her grand-children, Garrett, Katjana, MaLcoLm and Annika. They, along with other extended family members, provide a community of love and support that is deep and unending and for which she is exceedingly grateful. 15 [ Page 16 of 16 ] [ Heading 14 ] ABOUT TYNDALE [ Heading 14.1 ] THE HISTORY Tyndale University College & Seminary was founded in 1894 as the Toronto Bible Training School. Later known as Toronto Bible College, it merged with London Bible Institute (established in 1935 and later known as London College of Bible and Missions) in 1968 to become Ontario Bible College. The Seminary was established in 1976. In 1998, the name Tyndale was assumed, honouring the heritage of the Father of the English Bible, William Tyndale (1494-1536). Tyndale was an English reformer who studied and translated the Scriptures with a passion for the Christian faith and a willingness to follow God no matter the cost. He is a model for scholarship, faith, and vision. In 2003, Tyndale was accorded university college status by the provincial government. In 2007, Tyndale received approval from the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and from the Ontario College of Teachers to offer a Bachelor of Education program. The Seminary’s Doctor of Ministry degree program is accredited by The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada (ATS). In 2007, Tyndale purchased the Morrow Park property from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto. Tyndale is an evangelical, transdenominational school with over 1,200 students and more than 9,000 alumni. [ Heading 14.2 ] THE MISSION Tyndale is dedicated to the pursuit of truth, to excellence in teaching, learning and research, for the enriching of mind, heart and character, to serve the church and the world for the glory of God.
