[verse 3] Crown Him the Lord of peace, whose pow'r a scepter sways From pole to pole, that wars may cease, and all be pray'r and praise. His reign shall know no end, and round His pierced feet Fair flow'rs of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet. There he experienced World War II and saw his father Peter Torjesen, a Norwegian evangelist, shelter wartime refugees until Peter was killed by a Japanese dive-bomb in 1939. After the war, Edvard came to Canada and studied at Toronto Bible College (TBC), graduating in 1947. After TBC he served as a missionary in Asia. He became a language expert and worked on translating scripture into Taiwanese and Mongolian dialects. He also published Fredrik Franson: A Model for Worldwide Evangelism (Pasadena: William Carey Library, 1983). In 1990 Edvard and his family returned to Shanxi for the unveiling of a monument to his father Peter Torjesen. After a special appeal from the governor, the Torjesen family founded the Colorado- based Shanxi Evergreen Service, a non-profit humanitarian group aimed at assisting Shanxi and other Chinese Provinces by developing public benefit services for the common people. Edvard served as Executive Director of Evergreen for several years. Through Evergreen, Edvard has also been involved with trade policies related to China and the US. On June 17, 1997, Torjesen addressed the US-China Trade Relations and Renewal of China's Most-Favoured-Nation Status hearing before the Subcommittee on Trade of the Committee on Ways and Means of the House of Representatives. After a distinguished career, Edvard retired to Shanxi, Taiyuan. Although suffering from Alzheimer's, he is happy in his home, and still maintains the aura of one connected to Christ. His son, Finn Torjesen, serves Shanxi Evergreen Service as Executive Director, thus continuing the family's involvement with the ministry. [Heading 4.2.2] Seminary Mark Petersen, MDiv 1991 Mark Petersen graduated from Tyndale Seminary with a Master of Divinity in 1991. After leaving Tyndale, Mark and his wife Karen spent nine years working with non-profit organizations to grow leadership in church communities across the world. He served in places such as the US, Costa Rica and the Philippines. He also served in Columbia, living amongst the people, and experiencing first hand several aspects of its drug and guerrilla-fuelled history. Through this, however, he came to admire the Colombian resilience and the positive attitudes of the people despite their many years of civil strife. In November 2000, Mark joined the Bridgeway Foundation, a private grant-making organization whose mission is to collaborate [Page 17 of 20] [continuation from previous page] Graduation 2009 / 17 with innovators to grow healthy and productive non-profit organizations, and to help them engage in creative transformational projects across Canada and the world. Here, he serves as Executive Director, working with over 70 Christian and secular organizations to support numerous groundbreaking projects, including Yonge Street. Mission, Listen Up TV, Cambridge Memorial Hospital, World Vision, YMCA, Community Justice Initiatives and Tyndale University College & Seminary. Mark has supported Tyndale through his leadership as President of the Tyndale Alumni Association in 2007 and 2008. Mark's philanthropic leadership is marked by moral integrity, transparent accountability, public witness and unwavering commitment to a missional engagement of society for the sake of Christ. He continues to work with Bridgeway and lives in Mississauga with Karen and their two teenage sons, Daniel and Nathan. [Heading 4.3] HONORARY DOCTORATE 2009 [Heading 4.3.1] The Reverend Andrew Wong Quiet, humble, and never seeking the limelight, Andrew Wong is a creative and bold servant of Christ. He and his wife Linda founded the Toronto Chinese Baptist Church in 1968. Under his leadership, four other churches have been planted in southern Ontario: North Toronto Chinese Baptist Church (1974), Windsor Chinese Baptist Church (1975), Mississauga Chinese Baptist Church (1986), and Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church (1987). From these churches were built others: Brampton (1986), Markham (1990) and Pickering (1992) Chinese Baptist Church. Andrew grew up in Hong Kong. After graduating with a BTh from Alliance Bible Seminary in 1964, he went to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) as a missionary/pastor. He graduated with a BA from Nyack Missionary College (New York) in 1968, and earned an MDiv from Tyndale in 1981. Besides his pastoral calling, Andrew actively served as chair of the Co-ordination Centre of World Evangelism (Eastern Canada), coordinator for Canada East for the Chinese Baptist Fellowship, board member of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, the Canadian Baptist Ministries and the Overseas Missionary Fellowship. In the 1990s, Andrew and Linda led short-term missions to Bolivia, Venezuela, and Panama, engaging in evangelism, teaching and training among the Chinese in these countries. As well, they make annual trips to China, engaging in lay leadership and Bible training for those unable to attend Bible college. The Toronto school was founded in 1894, and is the third oldest school (after Moody Bible Institute and Nyack College) of its kind in North America. Known first as Toronto Bible Training School and then as Toronto Bible College, the school was located near the University of Toronto. Its founding President was Rev. Elmore Harris, Minister of the historic Walmer Road Baptist Church and a member of the Massey-Ferguson family. London College of Bible and Missions was founded in 1935 as London Bible Institute by Dr. J. Wilmot Mahood. In 1968 LCBM and TBC merged, becoming Ontario Bible College. In 1976, the College moved to its present location in North York. The development of Ontario Theological Seminary evolved naturally out of a demand by church, missions and students for graduate level studies. The name Tyndale was adopted in 1998 as part of a renewed vision to build a great centre of Christian higher education. Its namesake, William Tyndale, an early Protestant reformer and the first person to translate the Holy Scriptures from the original languages into English, serves as a model for scholarship, Christian faith and vision. On June 26, 2003 the Ontario Legislative Assembly passed Bill Pr21, which granted permission to change the name to Tyndale University College & Seminary and for the College to offer Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Arts Honours degrees in the humanities, social sciences and business. In 2007 Tyndale received approval from the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and from the Ontario College of Teachers to offer a Bachelor of Education program. In addition to current degrees, The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada (ATS) has approved Tyndale's Doctor of Ministry degree program. Tyndale is an evangelical, transdenominational school with over 1,200 students and more than 9,000 alumni. [Page 20 of 20] [Heading 5.1] THE CREST OF TYNDALE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE & SEMINARY [The Tyndale crest is on the left side of the page] [Heading 5.2] ■ The name Tyndale is taken from the father of the English Bible, William Tyndale (1494-1536). ■ Tyndale is a merger of two schools, the Toronto Bible Training School (1894), later known as Toronto Bible College (TBC), and London Bible Institute (1935), later known as London College of Bible and Missions (LCBM). In 1968 LCBM and TBC merged to become Ontario Bible College. The Seminary began in 1976. ■ The lantern symbol is taken from Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." ■ The Greek term douloi Christou describes Tyndale's vision; to be servants of Christ. ■ Burgundy and Blue are the school colours. [Heading 5.3] THE MISSION: Tyndale is dedicated to the pursuit of truth, to excellence in teaching, learning and research, for the enriching of mind, heart and character, to serve the church and the world for the glory of God.
