"Rik" Lovelady is a second generation Tyndale alumnus. His father Kenneth graduated in 1933. In his early life he traveled with his parents throughout the United States and Canada in a ministry of musical evangelism. With two years' high school correspondence credit, he was admitted to Toronto Bible College in 1955. The missionary emphasis of his educational training prompted him, following graduation, to enroll in Grace College, completing a BA in 1960, a MDiv summa cum laude and MTh from Grace Theological Seminary in 1963. He subsequently earned a MA in English from St. Francis University and PhD in English from Purdue University. He did further education at Fuller Theological Seminary Summer School, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and the Jerusalem Center for Biblical Studies. He is professor emeritus of Greek and Linguistics at Grace College. Alongside his academic calling, Rik plays and teaches the classical guitar. He has also done research in the history of the banjo and serves on the Board of the Fretted Instrument Guild of America and the Board of the American Banjo Museum. Rik and his wife, Grace, have two children, Stephen and Lynette. [ Heading 11.2 ] Seminary Elie Haddad, MTS 2000 Elie Haddad born and raised in Lebanon enrolled in the Tyndale MTS in 2000 where he was introduced to the idea of the missional church. In 2005, Elie and his wife, Mireille, were appointed by Canadian Baptist Ministries and sent by their church, the Middle East Baptist Church, to Lebanon as missionaries, serving as Provost of the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary. The seminary had been going through renovation after years of war and neglect. When he joined the seminary, it was ready for a re-launch. Despite the political uncertainty and instability in Lebanon, there is evidence of remarkable growth in the work and witness of the church. Given that Lebanon is the only country in the Arab world where students from various religious backgrounds can be enrolled in seminary education, Elie saw the strategic importance of extending the seminary's reach into the Middle East and North Africa region. It is his vision that the training of missional leaders can help to transform churches to become more relevant and effective in their societies. He is currently redesigning the curriculum to more intentionally equip such leaders. [ Page 17 of 20 ] Graduation 2008 | 17 Elie is also working on a PhD at the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Prague. His research is focused on "Cultivating a Missional Ecclesiology for the local Baptist Church in Lebanon." His wife, Mireille, serves alongside him as a CBM missionary, working in the seminary and various church ministries. [ Heading 12 ] HONOURARY DOCTORATES 2008 [ Heading 12.1 ] Geoffrey Moore Geoffrey Moore, a native of Winnipeg, graduated with a BComm from the University of Manitoba in 1968 and earned the chartered accountant (CA) designation in 1971. After completing studies as a Sloan Fellow at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in 1979, he established his own real estate consulting company. For 29 years, he has consulted with major retailers, as well as shopping centre developers and owners across Canada. His corporate philosophy has been "to remain small, but do exceptional work with highly qualified and motivated staff." Skilled in matters of finance and governance, Geoff is known across Canada for his thoughtful and deeply committed Christ-centred service to numerous ministries, including Focus on the Family, The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association of Canada, Samaritan's Purse, Youth for Christ, and Tyndale University College & Seminary. He unselfishly uses his considerable skills and resources to enable ministries to flourish and grow in the fulfilling of their missions. During Tyndale's crisis in the mid-nineties, Geoff provided outstanding leadership in the development of a new Board of Governors and served as Chair of the Resource Planning Committee. He continues to serve as Chair of The Tyndale Foundation. Geoff and his wife, Peggy, have been members of the Spring Garden Baptist Church in Toronto for over 35 years. They have three children: Greg, Monica and Scott who are married to Marya, Greg Kay and Kate, respectively. They are proud grandparents of three. [ Heading 12.2 ] Ajith Fernando Ajith Fernando, born and raised in Sri Lanka, has served as National Director of Youth for Christ in this region since 1976. He has recently been invited as Visiting Scholar at Tyndale Seminary, where he will engage in research and teaching as his schedule of international ministries permits. A graduate of the Vidyalankara University of Ceylon (BSc, 1972), Ajith graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary with an MDiv in 1974 and from Fuller Theological Seminary with the ThM degree in 1976. He has honourary doctorates from Gordon-Conwell —continued [ Page 18 of 20 ] Graduation 2008 / 18 Theological Seminary, Asbury Theological Seminary and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Ajith's influence as pastor, evangelist, and theologian reaches beyond the borders of Sri Lanka. He has been referred to as "The John Stott of Asia." During years when many fled their war-torn homeland for the West, Ajith chose to stay in Sri Lanka to raise up new generations of Christian leaders. He has authored 13 books, several of which have been published in a number of languages. They include The Supremacy of Christ and The NIV Commentary on Acts. The Call to Joy and Pain was chosen this year by "Christianity Today" as among the top ten books to shape evangelical life, thought, and mission. The Toronto school was founded in 1894, and is the third oldest school (after Moody Bible Institute and Nyack College) of its kind in North America. Known first as Toronto Bible Training School and then as Toronto Bible College, the school was located near the University of Toronto. Its founding President was Rev. Elmore Harris, Minister of the historic Walmer Road Baptist Church and a member of the Massey-Ferguson family. London College of Bible and Missions was founded in 1935 as London Bible Institute by Dr. J. Wilmot Mahood. In 1968 LCBM and TBC merged, becoming Ontario Bible College. In 1976, the College moved to its present location in North York. The development of the graduate school, Ontario Theological Seminary, evolved naturally out of a demand by church, missions and students for graduate level studies. The name Tyndale was adopted in 1998 as part of a renewed vision to build a great centre of Christian higher education. Its namesake, William Tyndale, an early Protestant reformer and the first person to translate the Holy Scriptures from the original languages into English, serves as a model for scholarship, Christian faith and vision. On June 26, 2003 the Ontario Legislative Assembly passed Bill Pr21, which granted permission to change the name to Tyndale University College & Seminary and for the University College to offer Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Arts Honours degrees in the humanities, social sciences and business. Tyndale University College & Seminary has acquired the spacious Morrow Park property from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto, in a transaction to be implemented in stages over a period of up to 10 years. Tyndale will retain its current campus; the new property, on Bayview Avenue just south of Steeles Avenue, will help meet the projected need for additional classroom and related space. In 2007 Tyndale received approval from the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and from the Ontario College of Teachers to offer a 12-month Bachelor of Education program. The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada (ATS) has approved Tyndale's Doctor of Ministry degree program. Tyndale is an evangelical, transdenominational school with over 1,200 students and more than 9,000 alumni. [ Page 20 of 20 ] [ Heading 15 ] THE CREST OF TYNDALE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE & SEMINARY [ The Tyndale crest is on the left side middle of the page. ] ■ The name Tyndale is taken from the father of the English Bible, William Tyndale (1494-1536). ■ Tyndale is a merger of two schools, the Toronto Bible Training School (1894), later known as Toronto Bible College (TBC), and London Bible Institute (1935), later known as London College of Bible and Missions (LCBM). In 1968, LCBM and TBC merged to become Ontario Bible College. The Seminary began in 1976. ■ The lantern symbol is taken from Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." ■ The Greek term douloi Christou describes Tyndale's vision: to be servants of Christ. ■ Burgundy and blue are the school colours.
