It was during that time that she developed her passion for a variety of ball sports, discovered her appreciation for nature and the outdoors, and established her desire to serve God and intentionally invest in the lives of her family and friends. After graduating from high school, Emily immigrated to Canada to pursue a post-secondary education. She completed her first year at Memorial University in Newfoundland, before a deep conviction to study the Bible brought her to Tyndale in the Fall of 2018. Since then, she has come to appreciate the significance of a supportive community, the power of a belly laugh, the importance of a daily nap, the fruitfulness of a good education, and the utter necessity of rooting oneself in God’s grace and truth. In the future, Emily plans on pursuing a Master’s in Theological Studies, not only to deepen her personal faith but to increase her capacity to serve and support groups of youth and young adults. [ Heading 6.2 ] Convocation Speaker Dr. Daniel L. Wong served as Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor of Christian Ministries at Tyndale University, Undergraduate Studies from 2000 through 2020. He served as Department Chair of Christian Ministries for the last three years. He also directed the Leading Edge program for first-year students and the Modular/Degree Completion Program for mature students. In addition to teaching, Dr. Wong enjoyed learning and serving with students outside of the classroom. These included the Out of the Cold and Urban Promise programs. Considered one of the highlights of his time at Tyndale, he ministered with students on two Tyndale mission trips to Camden, New Jersey and Miami. He facilitated Tyndale’s student involvement at Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship’s Urbana 06 and Urbana 12, both in St. Louis. From 1997-2003, he also taught the Tyndale Seminary’s Introduction to Preaching course and an Advanced Preaching course. In June 2020, he published Finding Our Voice: A Vision for Asian North American Preaching (Lexham Press) with Matthew D. Kim of Gordon-Conwell Seminary. Previous to serving at Tyndale, Dr. Wong was the English Ministry pastor with the Toronto Chinese Baptist Church and then with the Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church. He is ordained with the Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec. He is married to Flora and they have two adult children and four grandchildren. Dr. Wong continues to carry out itinerant ministry, preaching regularly to a wide spectrum of churches. He pursues his hobbies - photography, gardening, and following the escapades of Kim’s Convenience and its cast. Page 10 [ Page 11 of 11 ] [ Heading 7 ] ABOUT TYNDALE [ A photo of the cross on top of the building. ] [ Heading 7.1 ] TYNDALE’S HISTORY Tyndale University was founded in 1894 as the Toronto Bible Training School, the first school of its kind in Canada. Later known as Toronto Bible College, it merged in 1968 with the London College of Bible and Missions to become Ontario Bible College. The Seminary was established in 1976 to provide theological education at the graduate level. In 1998, the name Tyndale was adopted, honouring William Tyndale (1494-1536), the early English reformer whose commitment to making Scripture more widely accessible led him to undertake the first English translation of the Bible, at the cost of his own life. In 2003, Tyndale University College & Seminary was legislated by the Province of Ontario as a degree-granting post-secondary institution of higher learning. In 2007, Tyndale purchased the Morrow Park property from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto and in 2014, the move to the new 56-acre campus on Bayview Avenue was completed. Effective December 2020, Tyndale’s name was legally changed to Tyndale University by an act of legislation. Tyndale continues to build on its historic tradition as a vibrant, multidenominational institution of faith and learning. Tyndale’s diverse student body is engaged in comprehensive post-secondary education programs taught from a faith perspective. Tyndale provides undergraduate degree programs that prepare students for professional vocations and graduate studies. The Seminary, accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, offers graduate theological education at the master’s and doctoral levels. Tyndale presently has over 1,600 students representing more than 40 denominations and 60 ethnic backgrounds and over 12,900 alumni. [ Heading 7.2 ] THE MISSION Tyndale is dedicated to the pursuit of truth, to excellence in teaching, learning and research, for the enriching of mind, heart and character, to serve the church and the world for the glory of God.
