Challenged with many health issues, Angela’s education was cut short when she had to leave high school; her dream of achieving a university education no longer seeming possible. Instead of university, God gave her the privilege of raising six beautiful children. As her children grew, she served as a youth leader, pursued two college certificates, and volunteered extensively in classrooms at her children’s school. Combining these experiences with her love of history, she developed a program for delivering history to Grades 7 & 8, and was given the chance to pilot it. Through all these venues, God cultivated in her a heart for teaching. In 2014, two former students (now pursuing their degrees at Tyndale University) came to visit her. Knowing that university had once been part of Angela’s dreams, they encouraged her to contact Tyndale. Through a series of incredible blessings, it became possible for her to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in History and then a Bachelor of Education degree at Tyndale. She is graduating today, a mother, a grandmother and a certified teacher, at the end of a miraculous journey. Angela looks forward to serving and growing alongside her future students that they, too, might become all their Heavenly Father meant them to be. [ Heading 11.2 ] Convocation Speaker Dr. Joseph Smith has a doctorate in the Humanities and encompasses key notions amongst the disciplines of philosophy, psychology, religious studies, and literature with a focus on the philosophies of self-consciousness within the west and the intellectual background of black consciousness. He is a qualified elementary, secondary, and post-secondary educator with principalship qualifications; co-founder of the non-profit organization Generation Chosen which focuses on mental health and emotional intelligence within underserved communities; a project coordinator for the Black Experience Project housed and funded by Environics Research Institute; a facilitator and consultant in the area of Anti-Black Racism and Emotional health at Morneau Shepell; member of the board of Operation Black Vote Canada as the Director of Youth Outreach; and is a founding member of the Foundation for Black Communities which is a non-profit organization designed to adjudicate grants, develop policy, and liaise with government and the philanthropic sector to serve Black-led and Black-serving non-profits and charities. Later known as Toronto Bible College, it merged in 1968 with the London College of Bible and Missions to become Ontario Bible College. The Seminary was established in 1976 to provide theological education at the graduate level. In 1998, the name Tyndale was adopted, honouring William Tyndale (1494-1536), the early English reformer whose commitment to making Scripture more widely accessible led him to undertake the first English translation of the Bible, at the cost of his own life. In 2003, Tyndale University College & Seminary was legislated by the Province of Ontario as a degree-granting post-secondary institution of higher learning. In 2007, Tyndale purchased the Morrow Park property from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto and in 2014, the move to the new 56-acre campus on Bayview Avenue was completed. Effective December 2020, Tyndale’s name was legally changed to Tyndale University by an act of legislation. Tyndale continues to build on its historic tradition as a vibrant, multidenominational institution of faith and learning. Tyndale’s diverse student body is engaged in comprehensive post-secondary education programs taught from a faith perspective. Tyndale provides undergraduate degree programs that prepare students for professional vocations and graduate studies. The Seminary, accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, offers graduate theological education at the master’s and doctoral levels. Tyndale presently has over 1,600 students representing more than 40 denominations and 60 ethnic backgrounds and over 12,900 alumni. [ Heading 12.2 ] THE MISSION Tyndale is dedicated to the pursuit of truth, to excellence in teaching, learning and research, for the enriching of mind, heart and character, to serve the church and the world for the glory of God.
