Abstract
In this Research Portfolio, the author explores creating space for God as a means of spiritual formation, with a focus on church leadership. The author’s interest in this topic arises from his past personal experiences as a pastor and church board member. The Spiritual Autobiography documents the author’s formational journey from childhood through to the start of the Doctor of Ministry program. Reflecting on his experiences, especially in the context of church leadership, the author recognized the lack of a plan in most churches to spiritually form those who serve in church leadership, which led to the development of the Model. The Model of Spiritual Formation introduces the Rule of Life Leadership Model, which presents a plan to make space for God in the lives of board members and the board’s functions. The Research Project examined a component of the Model in collaboration with the leadership team from Deep Water Church in Halifax, NS. The findings indicated that the team developed increased closeness among its members and a stronger relationship with God, demonstrating that making space for God within leadership teams can promote enhanced spiritual formation. The Portfolio highlights the importance and necessity of implementing a plan for the spiritual formation of church boards.
