Abstract
This thesis is a study of John Wesley's doctrine of predestination. It focuses on Wesley's view of God's character based on his understanding of both Scripture and Jesus Christ. Wesley's concept of the character of God as revealed through His Word, both written and Incarnate, is the theological underpinning of his doctrine of predestination, as is shown in the thesis. The research is presented in four stages. The first chapter details historical antecedents that were contributive to Wesley's theology of predestination. Wesley was well read in Patristics, and the Reformers, among others. This section will discuss Wesley's points of convergence and divergence with various theologians. The second chapter examines Wesley's view of original sin and total depravity, and grace. It analyzes his view of unconditional election and unconditional reprobation, and predestination. The third chapter explores Wesley's view of the character of God revealed through Scripture. God's character, as gathered from Holy Writ generally, and from specific key biblical passages is observed. The fourth chapter assesses Wesley's view of God's character as revealed in Jesus Christ. Attention is paid to Christ's high priestly work, particularly his sacrifice and the extent of his atonement. This thesis concludes with Wesley's view that God's reigning attribute is redeeming love. God, as redeeming love, wills for all humans to be saved, and consequently Christ died for all. Since Wesley believed in original sin and its effects, God's grace is necessary for a human to believe in Christ. God's goodness and mercy allows the possibility of salvation for all, demonstrating his character. This is the basis for Wesley's doctrine of predestination.
